Deb,
We had a similar problem at a historic dairy barn where I worked, though never at this time of year. They are in the wood. The only thing you can do is hang fly paper to get the ones that are annoying you now and then call an exterminator to come and spray for them. The exterminator (we used Terminex) came once or twice a year and we closed for a couple of hours in the afternoon so the staff could leave. They lay eggs in the wood an unfortunately the problem will likely return in the fall. But, if you keep up with the spraying for a year or two they should start to die off completely.

Another historic house question:

We've got flies, big honking ones, mainly in one room upstairs. We have no idea
why they would still be around at this time of year. The temps have been
hovering around freezing and the heat is off in the house at night. Is there a
way to get rid of the pesky buggers without killing the wood in the windows in
the process or poisoning the staff and visitors? I think they might be in the
wood itself as we've had a problem with yellow jackets but thankfully, they
weren't around this year. We also get sporadic swarms of ladybugs too, mainly
in the Fall.

Thanks again in advance!!

Deb
