PACSCL Summer Seminar on Ephemera
August 4-6, 1994
Philadelphia, PA
 
Sponsored by the
Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries
 
The seminar will address topics of interest to librarians, archivists,
museum curators, collectors, and researchers who use ephemera.  Sessions
on appraisal, intellectual control, exhibitions, preservation issues,
digital imaging, and research use of ephemera are included on the program.
 
All sessions will be held at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, 19
South 22nd St., and evening receptions will be held at other PACSCL
institutions.  An optional bus trip to the Hagley and Winterthur Museums
in Delaware will be offered on the final day of the seminar.
 
Registration for the seminar is $175; a late fee of $25 will be added after
July 1st.  Registration includes all sessions of the seminar, an opening
luncheon, morning coffee, evening receptions, handouts, and information
packets.  Attendance is limited.
 
PROGRAM
 
Thursday, August 4, 1994
 
The program begins at 11:00 a.m. with an opening luncheon and
registration at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia.  Following
registration, Thomas Horrocks, President of PACSCL and Director of the
Library for Historical Services at the College of Physicians -- opening
remarks and introduction to PACSCL.
 
Diane DeBlois and Robert Dalton Harris, of aGatherin', and charter members
of the Ephemera Society of America -- appraisal of ephemera and the links
between collectors, dealers, and librarians.
 
A panel discussion on intellectual control of ephemera -- Deborah A.
Smith, currently Curator of Paper Documentary and Advertising Artifacts at
the Strong Museum, Rochester, NY, and soon to be Supervising Curator of
the Bureau of Historic Sites in New York State; Wendy Shadwell, Curator of
Prints at the New-York Historical Society; one other speaker to be announced.
 
The Athenaeum of Philadelphia will host an evening reception.
 
Friday, August 5, 1994
 
Kenneth Finkel, Curator of Prints, Library Company of Philadelphia --
acquisition of ephemera, and a discussion of one institution's ephemera
policies.
 
Russell Mascieri, Victorian Images -- the evolving commercial marketplace
for ephemera.
 
Barbara Fahs Charles, Staples & Charles Ltd. -- exhibiting ephemera.
 
Lois Olcott Price, Winterthur Library -- preservation techniques for ephemera.
 
James A. Findlay, Librarian, Wolfsonian Foundation -- imaging project of
an ephemera collection from the librarian's point of view.
 
Jay T. Last -- digital computer storage and retrieval systems for ephemera
in museum collections.
 
The Library Company of Philadelphia will host an evening reception.
 
Saturday, August 6, 1994
 
Two Researcher's Views on Using Ephemera Collections: Katherine Ott,
1993-94 Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellow, Museum of American History; and
Theresa R. Snyder, Assistant Director, University of Pennsylvania Archives
and Records Center, and doctoral candidate in American Civilization.
 
Closing remarks: Diane DeBlois and Robert Dalton Harris.
 
An optional bus trip to the Hagley Museum and Library and the Winterthur
Library to view selections from their ephemera collections will be offered
to seminar participants from noon until 5 p.m.

Registration for the seminar is $175.00; if registering after July 1st,
please add a $25 late fee to the total.
 
A limited number of hotel rooms will be reserved at a special conference
rate of $80.00 per night (single or double) at The Latham Hotel, 17th and
Walnut Sts.  The hotel is approximately 7 1/2 blocks from the College of
Physicians (about a 10-15 minute walk).  Parking is available at a rate of
$12.00/day.  Reservations and payment for hotel rooms must be arranged
