I haven't had the experience in the Museum field, but do not kid yourselves, age discrimination is alive and well in most industries. The most common experience is that you don't actually get that interview after all. You've responded to the position announcement with your resume, but you never hear anything. And if you call or write, you'll just get the "we already hired someone" response.

What is so bad about this and all the other forms of discrimination is that you never get to confront the discriminator about what they are doing. They will be very nice and polite. I believe that everyone is now alert to the potential for legal action, so they are very careful to avoid any hint of concern about your age, your sex, your race, or religion.

I would not die my hair or get a facelift, and I wouldn't dress like a 20-year old, but the other advice is good. Wear up-to-date clothing, a fresh haircut, and be your best live-wire self if you do get an interview. You have to dispell that idea lurking in your future employer's mind that you are too old and slow for this job.
