Biltmore Estate, in Asheville, North Carolina, invites applicants for the
position of Conservator for a multiple room restoration project.
Responsibilities will include examination, technical analysis, conservation
research, treatment, and documentation of items including the categories of
furniture, architectural elements and decorative objects from Biltmore’s
permanent collection in accordance with the A.I.C. Ethics and Standards
guidelines.  The Conservator will also assist in curatorial departmental
duties including preventive care, maintenance and conservation consulting on
all the collections.    Furniture and Objects Conservators are encouraged to
apply.

This position requires a graduate degree from a recognized conservation
training program and some conservation experience within a museum or
historic house setting or an equivalent combination of education and
experience.  Additional qualifications include excellent attention to
detail, the ability to plan work and meet deadlines without compromising
quality of work performed, conversant with word processing and photographic
techniques, along with excellent written and verbal communication skills and
some formal training in furniture or decorative art history.  The
Conservator reports to the Conservation Manager of the Museum Services
Department.  This is a year round, full time position for a one year term
with the possibility of renewal for a second year.  Salary will be based on
qualifications.

Physical requirements include excellent manual dexterity, the ability to
lift up to 60 pounds occasionally, climb ladders and scaffolding,
occasionally work in extreme temperatures, the ability to wear a respirator
as necessary when working with certain chemicals and to operate box trucks.
A valid NC Driver’s License (or the ability to obtain one) is also required.
