POSITION AVAILABLE:  ASSISTANT COLLECTIONS MANAGER

The Autry Museum of Western Heritage is a non-profit institution devoted
to the collection, preservation and interpretation of the history and
material culture of the American West.  Located in Griffith Park in Los
Angeles, the Museum opened to the public in 1988 and is accredited by the
AAM.  The growing collection of 40,000+ objects concentrates in two broad
areas:  materials related to the historical West and materials related to
the development of the fictional image of the West.  The museum pursues an
active collecting program and an aggressive schedule of changing
exhibitions.  The Collections Management Department is responsible for all
registrarial activities and shares responsibilities for the day-to-day
care of the collections with other departments.  The Autry Museum of

Job Description:  This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position with
benefits.  The Assistant Collections Manager is a member of the
Collections Management Department, and assumes responsibilities with the
direction of the Collections Manager for Permanent Collections and the
Collections Manager for Loans and Acquisitions in areas including but not
limited to pre-accessioning processes, accessioning/registering,
processing and accountability for accessioned collections, incoming and
outgoing loan activities, and traveling exhibitions.  All activities are
supported by the ARGUS collections management database.

Available:  Immediately.

Qualifications:  Minimum requirements are BA (museum studies, history,
American studies, anthropology, art history, or related) plus two solid
years experience in museum registration or collections management or MA in
one of the above disciplines with one year experience in registration or
collections management.  Preference will be given candidates with
experience in automated collections records systems, especially ARGUS;
proficiency in Word Perfect; experience in loans and shipping; museum
studies education.
