Don't give up hope, it can happen, we have an Australian Conservator who required a work permit when she joined us. There do seem to be less applicants for conservation jobs than for curatorial jobs. Essentially in order to get a work permit you have to have been the only suitable candidate who applied for the job (the employer has to show that the job was properly advertised and that the assessment of suitability was made against proper criteria). The employer has to apply for the work permit and it is valid for that job & that individual only. If you apply for another job in the UK the new employer will need to get you a work permit for the new job.

Must museum jobs in the UK are advertised in "The Museums Journal" which is published by the Museums Association - it comes out monthly with a recruitment supplement published between issues.

If you have any parents or grandparents from any of the 15 Eurpean Union countries or their colonies it may be worth checking with their embassies in your country to see if you might have inherited any residence/work rights.
