Hello, I can provide answers and case histories of how the National
Archives handled artifact and records issues the last 7 years as we
prepared nearly 1 million cubic feet of records for shipment to our new
facility. We used a proprietary system to track artifacts, and developed
new thinking on housing and storing those items.

I served on NARA's artifact database task force for the Presidential
Libraries and designed the initial blueprint of fields and specifications. I
have worked at NARA for 11 years and understand the records issues.

On Jan. 6 I begin a 3 month detail at another Federal agency assisting
with the development of a database. You may e-mail me with specific
questions, or if you prefer to talk about these issues, please telephone
me at 202-208-3370 x263.

Sincerely, Jeff Carter, Archivist, National Archives and Records
Administration.
