Vocabulary Resources for Object Documentation
and
Vocabulary Resources for Textual Materials

June 4, 5, and 6, 1996
at the Canadian Heritage Information Network, Hull, Canada

Workshop 1: Vocabulary Resources for Object Documentation - Tuesday,
June 4 and Thursday, June 6, 1996

This workshop is for those who catalog and document collections of
objects or images of objects, and who have familiarity with issues of
automated collections management, authority files , and information
retrieval. Using the electronic edition of the AAT, participants will
explore the AAT vocabulary which contains terminology particularly
useful for the description of objects and images. In addition, the
Union List of Artist Names (ULAN) will be introduced. Hands-on
exercises will allow participants to become familiar with the breadth
of the AAT and ULAN vocabularies and to practice selecting terms
relevant to the exercise examples. There will be an opportunity to
discuss issues of local applications.

Workshop 2: Vocabulary Resources for Textual Materials - Wednesday,
June 5, 1996

This workshop is intended for those who catalog collections of
archival and bibliographic materials. discussion will include subject
analysis, the role of thesauri, comparison of AAT and LCSH, and the
use of the AAT in the MARC format. Hands-on exercises will provide
the opportunity to become familiar with the facetted structure of the
AAT, explore form/genre terminology, practice constructing indexing
strings, and select a variety of access points. In addition, the
Union List of Artist Names will be introduced.

Place: Canadian Heritage Information Network
Hull (near Ottawa), Canada

Time: 9.30 am - 4.30 pm

Instructors: Susanne Warren and Josephine Nieuwenhuis, AAT

Fee: Can $ 100 or US $ 70 (this does not include lunch)

Purchasers of the Art and Architecture Thesaurus, Second Edition, may
be eligible to receive a complimentary registration for one AAT
workshop, providing that they have sent the product registration card
to the AAT offices in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Registration: Please register by sending the registration form that
is included in the FOLLOWING message to Martine LaChance at CHIN.
Registration deadline in May 17, 1996. Registration will be on a
first come first serve basis.
