The term "Docent" is a formal academic title in Sweden and, I
believe, elsewhere in Europe. It is officially translated into
English as "Associate Professor" and has the same meaning as that
title does in the USA. A "docentship" is granted by a particular
University but it is not necessary for the holder of such a position
to be on the active payroll of that university.

I made the mistake of printing up double-sided business cards when I
received my docent title from the University of Upsala. On the
English side I was a Ph.D. and Curator (not wishing to suggest that
the museum at which I was employed had professorships; a sensitive
issue in Sweden), and on the Swedish side I was a Docent and "Första
Intendent". It struck me at the time that I might be in big trouble
if the word docent meant anything in an anglophone frame of
reference other than what it did in Swedish.

The confused look on the face of the very first U.S. American
colleague to whom I handed the thing instantly revealed that my fear
was well-founded and, after brief explanation in both directions,
the edition was withdrawn from foreign circulation.
