I volunteer at The NAMES Project Foundation and think it is important

The NAMES Project Foundation is recruiting for the position of
Quilt Conservator (full-time, exempt) for the AIDS Memorial Quilt

The Quilt Conservator is responsible for the preservation, maintenance,
and repair of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.  Primary duties include the
assessment and preparation of new panels for sewing into blocks and the
repair and maintenance of already-sewn Quilt.  The Quilt Conservator
works with the Production Coordinator in the delegation of repair work.
This includes training of sewing staff and volunteers in repair
protocols.  This individual also works with the Warehouse Manager and the
Packing and Shipping Assistant to ensure that the Quilt is properly
stored, handled, and shipped.  The Quilt Conservator reports to the
Director of Administration.

Salary:
Mid-to-high twenties; benefits package with paid vacation

Required Skills, Experience, and Abilities:
Candidates must have excellent hand-sewing skills, expert knowledge of
both home and industrial sewing machines, and a working knowledge of
conservation practices and methodology, preferably with an emphasis on
textile conservation.  The ability to coordinate and prioritize a wide
assortment of Quilt repair needs as well as good overall communication
skills are essential, as well as the ability to work with panelmakers,
volunteers, other NAMES Project sewing personnel, and outside
conservation consultants.  The ideal candidate is a self-motivated,
detail-oriented team player with a unique ability to solve repair
problems creatively and efficiently, while preserving the individual
integrity of each memorial panel.  The ability to work with people in
emotional situations is necessary, as is the ability to work flexible
hours to accommodate workload and volunteer-access.  Computer experience
is needed (Macintosh preferred).  Sensitivity to AIDS and HIV issues is a
must.

Minimum Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have demonstrated at least 5 years sewing
experience as well as a working knowledge of conservation practices,
preferably with an emphasis on textiles.  Familiarity with the AIDS
Memorial Quilt is highly desirable.
