EARNED INCOME TRAINING FOR ARTS MANAGERS OF COLOR

The Association of American Cultures (TAAC) is pleased to announce that it
will present the Entrepreneurial Institute for the Arts, July 24-28, 1997 at
the University of Texas at Austin.

Instruction will be provided by professors with the Universities, Graduate
School of Business and a team of experts on earned income and nonprofit
organizations. This program is designed to train arts managers and artists of
color how to generate a profit within the nonprofit structure. The institute
is being funded with assistance by a grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation.

"TAAC has been working on the concept or earned income for nonprofit
organizations of color since 1990," says Ricardo Hernandez, TAAC Chairman,
about the origins of the institute. TAAC conducted a planning process to
determine what was the greatest problem facing culturally diverse arts
organizations across the nation. The answer was the lack of business
experience and training to develop earned income as a serious source of
program support.

With the recent reduction of public support for arts programs, now is the
time to begin exploration of earned income as a new source or support for the
nonprofit arts organization.  Says Louis LeRoy, coordinator for the
institute, "As artists, we have been taught to believe that money is bad and
it will taint the artistic process. This kind of thinking has served to
dis-empower the arts and prevented the economic development of arts
programs
on a national level. The Entrepreneurial Institute is an important
opportunity for all people of color in taking the first steps towards a
stronger community economic development approach."

TAAC's first earned income training took place in 1991 and was enormous
success. It planted the seed for one of the models for earned income for the
nonprofit. Jo Bunton Keel, who attended the 1991 training, took the idea that
turned the Eulilpions theater into an entrepreneurial arts organization.
In 1996, the theater purchased a $1.7 million dollar building in downtown
Denver.  The parking lot alone generates $150,000 annually in revenue. Jo
Bunton Keel is one of the "experts" who will make up the institute's staff
this July in Austin.

***Others, who will make up the staff are Dr. Richard Steckel, Roberto Barriagan
and Louis Leroy***. Dr. Steckel developed ninety five percent of the budget for
the Denver's Children's Museum through earned income sources. Roberto
Barrigan, an authority on earned income, consulted with the Expansion Arts,
Capstone Marketing Project. Louis LeRoy is one of the developers of the
earned income training and is presently coordinating the presentation of the
institute in July.
