I fowarded the recent email discussion on this subject to my colleague Dr
George Bankes, Keeper of Ethnology here in Manchester, and I append his
reply for general information. Bill P.

Dear Bill,

Thank you for the numerous email messages about mummies and human
remains. You might refer these people to the Museums Journal
(Museums Association, London) for July 1994 which has a whole section
entitled 'Human Remains in UK Museums : A Scientific Resource and a
Political Problem'(see pages 23-34 of that issue). There is now an
ever expanding literature on the treatment of human remains in
museums but the July 1994 Museums Journal includes excellent
summaries of the main issues and also publishes various Guidelines
such as those of the UK Museum Ethnographers Group, the WAC Code of
Ethics and the Vermillion Accord.

All best wishes,

George (Bankes)
