The Association of Midwest Museums (AMM) and Wisconsin Federation of Museums
has an exceptional annual conference planned for Milwaukee, Wisconsin
between Nov. 4 and 8.  Listed below are the workshops being offered during
the conference on November 4 and 5.  If you are interested in attending any

The Hazards of Moving Collections
Presenter:  Monona Rossol, Arts, Crafts, and Theater Safety (ACTS)

Whether you are moving into a new building or refurbished building or space
within an existing building, this workshop will focus on what you need to
know regarding personnel and safety when moving collections.  The presenter
will cover applicable laws and standards, worker/employee obligations,
strategies to make it work, basic concepts of occupational health and
toxicity, precautions and hazards/precautions for different types of
materials and provide information on topics like mold, carpets, and
post-disaster issues.

The Evaluation Process From Beginning to End

While the evaluation process can be intimidating, it must play an integral
role in any museum seeking to improve its programs and services.  Learn to
identify whom to involve in the evaluation process. Review evaluation at
four different levels.  Discover the strengths and limitations of evaluation
methods including questionnaires,interviews and focus groups. Emphasis will
be placed on developing guiding questions, selecting appropriate evaluation
methods, minimizing errors, analyzing data and making recommendations for
change.  Key concepts will be illustrated using selected parts of
evaluations actually implemented in museums.

This workshop provides a theoretical and practical foundation for museum
personnel who are beginning to build on-line catalogs for their
institutions.  Topics to be covered include:  architecture of online catalog
systems; preparation of existing catalog data for digitization; commercial
software versus custom solutions; and budgeting for long-term maintenance.
Participants will be led through a sample project, with hands-on activities,
from planning to public launch.

increase your marketing impact, and build greater customer loyalty.  You'll
discover that true branding involves much more than logos and taglines - it
analyzes and reflects the very heart of an institution.

Design is central in communicating an exhibit's message.  Either
subliminally or consciously, visitors react to the shapes, color, and layout
of the physical space.  The public makes meaning of exhibits when design
complements interpretation.  The presenters will discuss design strategies,
including traffic flow, mood, object placement, and the role of graphics.
In the latter part of the workshop participants will be divided into groups
and asked to design an exhibit.

design?  How do building materials affect indoor environmental air quality?
How can a 'green' building help promote your museum?  What is the LEED
Certification process?  The Kubala Washatko Architects, Inc. will conduct a
walking tour about 'Green' building for public educational institutions.
They will draw on their experience designing facilities including the
Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, the J.M. Kohler Art Museum, Urban Ecology
Center, and others.

The Never Say "They Don't Read" Exhibit Writing Workshop

In this hands-on workshop, we'll revisit useful techniques, tinker with
convention, and borrow from other media to forge fresh strategies for
bringing exhibit text to life. To get things rolling, we'll take a look at
words photographed in museum and non-museum settings. Participants will then
work at their own pace, through a series of stations offering fun, unusual,
and focused challenges in writing and editing materials for varied
audiences.  A portion of the session will be devoted to discussion and
critique, so participants are encouraged to bring along excerpts from
work-in-progress, as well as writing utensils or laptops.
