Although I have not used period instruments, I ran
music labs in which we used plastic and wood
recorders. There are a number of sterilization
solutions typically used in school settings for these
instruments, and we simply ordered it from a catalog
or music store. It requires a staff member or
volunteer to be very diligent about cleaning, though.
You might ask local music teachers about which catalog
sources they use.

A much less controversial string for me today.  I am
curious as to whether anyone has placed period
instruments (tin whistles, jaw harps, etc.) in
hands-on spaces and how they got around sanitary
issues (replaceable mouth pieces, barriers of some
kind).  Any sources for these instruments with these
detachable mouthpieces, etc. would be appreciated.
