Development Director

Description: The Bostonian Society, Boston’s historical society,
operates the Old State House Museum, a library of Boston history,
and a full range of educational and public programs. Founded in
1881 to save the Old State House from being moved to Chicago, TBS
is a small but venerable organization in the center of Boston
with a significant collection of Boston artifacts, manuscripts,
photographs and artwork. With a strong and committed Board of
Directors, and a $1.5 million annual budget, it is undertaking a
major development effort which includes goals to expand its
educational programming, increase access to its collections, and
to undertake needed preservation/conservation efforts.

The Director of Development works with the Executive Director and
special and standing committees of the Board of Directors to plan
and implement a development strategy to triple donor support
through grants, corporate giving, and the annual appeal. The
position includes involvement with publications, public
relations, and membership.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have demonstrated
imagination and leadership skills in the planning and execution
of a broad range of fundraising activities that involve staff,
board volunteers, and the Executive Director. Must have proven
success in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting funding
sources.  Specialized expertise is necessary in major gifts,
grant preparation, corporate support, and trustee and membership
solicitation.

Knowledge of greater Boston giving community important. General
knowledge of planned giving, special event planning, and capital
campaigns required. Must be self-directed, able to plan and
communicate effectively, and enjoy working with a broad audience,
including the charitable giving community, corporate leaders,
board and committee members, and staff. Strong writing and
computer skills and knowledge of development applications
required. Minimum ten years working experience with at least five
in development required. An interest in history and education is
important.
