Professionals:
 
5.7 Rule
Where an identification service is provided by the museum the relevant
museum professional had a duty to identify an object submitted by a member
of the public.  Significant facts must not be withheld or deliberately
misleading information given.  In the event of the professional having
insufficient knowlege, this should also be stated.
Guideline
The provision of an identification service can be a fruitful source of
acquisitions and afford useful contributions to knowlege, as well as
developingthe museum's image in the local community.  Museum professionals
should be objective about their own capabilities, and seek advice when
needed.
 
6.7 Rule (on personal activities)
Museum professionals should refrain from putting a market value on objects
for commercial purposes.
 
And it says [rule 3.12] thatI should not evaluate 'an object which there is
good reason to believe was acquired by its owner in contravention of the
UNESCO convention on ... Cultural Property, 1970.
 
Buckinghamshire County Museum's policy is not to give valuations.  Much as
the public would like us to!
