Robert Chenhall to give closing plenary at the 1998 Museum Computer
Network Conference (Santa Monica, September 23 - 26)

Before there were pioneers in the area of automation and data access in
museums there were explorers, and Robert G. Chenhall can be categorized
as both. In 1974 he coordinated the creation of the first collaborative,
distributed contolled vocabulary, Nomenclature for Museum Cataloging: A
System for Classifying Man-Made Objects. This work was groundbreaking
not only in the collaborative nature of the collection and collation of
terms, but in its hierarchical organization. Mr. Chenhall is also the
co-author of Museum Collections and Today's Computers with David Vance,
which, in 1988, introduced many to the automation and standardization of
museum information. Mr. Chenhall, a former museum director, is presently
a consultant to museums and small business in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Museum Computer Network is pleased to welcome Mr. Chenhall who will
present his unique perspective on the state-of-the-art in museum
information mangement at the Closing Plenary of the 1998 MCN Conference
on September 26.
