Your response to this discussion regarding numbering was excellent.  I
much prefer to hear how you have solved the problem of old cat numbers,
working with what you have, making sense of it to your existing staff,
and go on from there, rather than congratulating yourself about not
having to do anything about something for some length of time or because
you don't have a computer system you are free from having to resolve it.


Whether you use Paradox or WordPerfect or Microsoft Word or some other
specialized collections management program, you will still have to set up
your accession/catalog number into fields that call for it.

Aside from the "parts" and the "whole" discussion, this dialog might get
even more interesting once we find out what type of systems are used for
temporary numbers (loans, items just dropped off temporarily, prop
numbers, education collection numbers, presentation items, etc.).
