Dear all,

As a non-museologist with a lot of interest in this field, I would like to
raise some points relating to how forign cultural objects are presented in
the west; which I find worthy of being addressed.
Historically, thousands of archaeological, ethnographic, etc objects from
various parts of the world have found their way into museums of every kind
in the west (mainly Europe & the U.S.).
As new museums are constructed or when museum curators renovate their
display panels, along with all the educational labels, text panels, dioramas
etc. one rarely (no statistics involved here) expect to see such museums
getting assistance from specialists people who are part of that country,
culture, or community who can help in the interpretation and correlation
between the various objects to be put on display, or at least give a second
opinion. This is particularly evident if such professionals live in another
country.
On the other hand, one can see the huge and intensive interest of western
museums, museum contractors, etc in building and equipping museums in
developing countries. Not only that, but probably all the academic research
needed for the museum is usually done by their compatriots in their home
country.
What is the issue?
My observation is centred around the possible lack of objectivity in some
museums due to the exclusion of native thoughts and ideas on the presented
material culture. Although I have not read anything yet in this regard, but
I dare say that large and small museums may be alike in this regard.

My purpose of raising this issue is to benefit from all your thoughtful
inputs and contributions.

Yours,

Abdullah Alsharekh,Ph.D
