SECOND FORT CRAIG CONFERENCE CALL FOR PAPERS - Due Date 7-30-04

“If Walls Could Talk, Would People Listen?”

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM)is pleased to announce the Second

Fort Craig Conference, to be held November 2nd-5th, 2004, in Socorro, New

Mexico. Fourteen years after the First Fort Craig Conference, 2004 was

chosen to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Fort Craig.

The conference will be followed by a variety of activities and events at

the Fort and in Socorro.

The BLM is now accepting proposals for papers on any aspect of Fort

Craig History, Buffalo Soldiers, Indian Wars or New Mexico Volunteers.

Papers on archaeology, anthropology, history, military history, biography

and other social sciences that are within this scope are welcome. There

will be an emphasis on the Indian Wars, Buffalo Soldiers and New Mexico

Volunteers. Evaluation criteria for selection of presentations will be 1)

Relevance to the history of the Fort, 2) Relevance to understudied aspects

of that history, 3) Appropriateness for publication. Because papers will

be edited for inclusion in a published volume, all proposals must include

the proposed paper in Word format on disk, as well as the name, address

(electronic and real), organizational affiliation (if any) and basic

biographical information on the presenter.

Conference presentations should be limited to thirty minutes, however

written submissions may be longer if necessary to cover the subject

matter.Individual papers will be grouped with one or more others into

thematic sessions and assigned a moderator.

Send proposals to Pam Smith, BLM Las Cruces Field Office, 1800

Marquess St., Las Cruces, New Mexico,88005. The deadline for the submission

of proposals is July 30th, 2004. Please direct questions to Pam Smith,

505.525.4398 ([log in to unmask]).
