The Museum-Ed Discussion List
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
May 2002

Please save this message for future reference, especially if you are not
familiar with Majordomo list software. This might look like a waste of disk
space now, but in 6 months you will be glad you saved this information. In
fact, you should create a new mail folder for subscription confirmation
messages like this one, and for the "welcome messages" from the list owners
that you will occasionally receive after subscribing to a new list.

Please contact Larisa Somsel at [log in to unmask] if you have any questions.

PURPOSE & HISTORY:
MUSEUM-ED is an open, unmoderated discussion list that serves as a forum for
museum educators. It was created in response to an EDCOM luncheon at AAM in
Philadelphia (1995). At that luncheon, museum educators expressed a need to
create a network for the easy exchange of information. With that goal in mind
the list was created by Kris Wetterlund and Larisa Somsel.

Topics for discussion will most likely be wide-ranging. We hope that
MUSEUM-ED will provide participants with opportunities to ask questions, to
exchange ideas, to explore current issues, to share experiences, to reflect
on the process, and to inspire new directions in museum education. The
exchange of information is the key here, so if you feel it is important to
the museum education community, go ahead and discuss it!

ABOUT MAJORDOMO SOFTWARE:
Majordomo is an automated system that allows users to subscribe and
unsubscribe to mailing lists, and to retrieve files from list archives.

You can interact with the Majordomo software by sending it commands in the
body of mail messages addressed to [log in to unmask] Please do not
put your commands on the subject line; Majordomo does not process commands in
the subject line.

SENDING MESSAGES:
To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just
send mail to [log in to unmask] This is called "sending mail to the list,"
because you send mail to a single address and Majordomo makes copies for all
the people who have subscribed. This address is also called the "list
address."

You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be
distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent
to the "Majordomo address", [log in to unmask] It is very important
to understand the difference between the two.

SUBSCRIBING:
To subscribe to the list send an email to [log in to unmask] with the
subject line blank and the body reading:

subscribe museum-ed

UNSUBSCRIBING:
To unsubscribe to the list send an email to [log in to unmask] with
the subject line blank and the body reading:

unsubscribe museum-ed

If your email address has changed since you first subscribed and you need to
unsubscribe from a different address than you are sending from, give that
address in the command:

unsubscribe museum-ed [log in to unmask]

ARCHIVES:
For a searchable archive of Museum-ed, please visit the new archives at:
http://www.topica.com/lists/museum-ed-archive/

DIGEST FORMAT:
If you'd like to receive one summary email a day from museum-ed, you should
subscribe to the digest list by sending the following command to
[log in to unmask]:

    subscribe museum-ed-digest

POSTPONE:
Unlike some other list software, majordomo does not have a postpone feature.

ATTACHMENTS:
At this time attachments are not allowed on the museum-ed list.
