A good repository of "fraternal" items is the Museum of Our National
Heritage in Lexington, Mass 02173. While primarily Masonic artifacts, they
do have an extensive collection of other fraternal items.
Were the Maccabees Jewish? The American Jewish Historical Society might be
another to try. ([log in to unmask])

Subject: Maccabees

Recently, our museum was offered two suitcases full of Maccabee items,
including
district signs, an "Ohio Great Camp" pennant, "Great Camp of Ohio" wool
banner, and a couple other banners, and a suitcase full of white pants
and plastic belts. Unfortunately, none of these items fit into the
scope of our collection. The person who offered them to us really has
no use for them, and we would like to give him a few suggestions of
other possible homes for the items, so that they don't meet an untimely
end. Is anyone familiar with a repository of Maccabee items? If so,
please send me your contact information and I will pass it along to
him. Thanks. (The Maccabees were a fraternal organization, providing
insurance of sorts to the widows and children of members).
