Regarding leave benefits, it is not uncommon for the executive director or
CEO to have a contract or other agreement that provides for a month off for
any and all purposes each calendar year. (Holidays, sick leave, vacation,
comp time, etc.) Having had that "benefit" for 16 years now in two
settings, I can testify that (1) its almost impossible to use it and it
washes at year's end rather than accumulating and (2) other staff see it as
a "perk" that everyone ought to have, an undeserved luxury.

Generally I think the small non-profits allow two weeks paid vacation each
year with no accumulation, a week of sick leave (and everyone looks the
other way during an extended illness) and 6-7 paid holidays. Government
museums and the larger private ones with compensation specialists on staff
probably start with 2 weeks, go to three after 5 yrs. service, and 4 after
10 yrs. service, with some plan to allow accumulation of unused leave from
year to year.
