We’ve been using Dropbox for a couple years now and it has worked remarkably well for us.

We use it in two ways, for researchers and patrons who regularly request content, we set up an individual folder for them and invite them to join the folder, in which case they need to have a Dropbox account of their own.

For non-regular users we use either the Public Folder in which we simply provide them a link to their content. If there are multiple items, we create a folder and send a link to the folder. Neither of these require the user to have an account or download the Dropbox client.

We’ve never had complaints from our users and it allows for much faster access to our high res content than our old system of burning cds!

To cut to the chase, here at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. we deliver digital scans of our photo collection for our researchers and we currently use a service called Hightail (formerly YouSendIt) but I have been receiving complaints that researchers can't download what they've ordered in addition to having to join Hightail to download the images (which many do not want to do).

Does anyone have any recommendations on an alternative, free, service (that you don't have to joing to download)? I've heard DropBox is good but have not used it much myself and was wondering what everyone else was doing.
