You may wish to read articles on this topic that have been published
over the past 30 years in the "Proceedings" of the Association for
Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums' annual meetings. This
topic is also regularly discussed on the ALHFAM member discussion
list, and there is no one answer--it is as complex as Dave, Marc,
Ellen & Randy have indicated. Reading these papers will give you some
idea of the issues that need to be considered.

The "Proceedings" Index is on-line at http://tinyurl.com/ALHFAM-Index
and can be sorted by year, author, article title and content category.
It searchable by means of your browser's search function.

If you cannot find a copy of the "Proceedings" in a library near you,
contact ALHFAM's Secretary/Treasurer, Judith Sheridan
([log in to unmask]), who should be able to help you.

Martha Katz-Hyman
Independent Curator and
Chair, ALHFAM Publications Committee
