Historic Deerfield Program Notice

Women and the colonial tavern is the forum topic on Saturday, June 10,
2000 at Historic Deerfield, Deerfield, Massachusetts. Sharon V.
Salinger, Professor of History and Associate Dean of the College of
Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, University of California,
Riverside, will explore the relationship of the tavern to women in
colonial New England. Through travel diaries, court records, and other
manuscript sources, she will describe general tavern law, the
prosecution of women for crimes related to taverns and drinking, and
women's roles as tavernkeepers. Salinger will lead participants on an
imagined tour inside a tavern, to eavesdrop on conversations and
arguments, to view curiosities, and to witness the sounds and smells.

Anne Digan Lanning, Associate Curator for Interpretation at Historic
Deerfield, will present a case study of female tavernkeepers in western
Massachusetts, and Susan McGowan, a Master Guide at Historic Deerfield,
will present an open hearth cooking demonstration on tavern fare.
Participants will also tour two museum buildings at Historic Deerfield:
the Wells-Thorn House, which was operated as a tavern for two years in
the mid-eighteenth century, and the Barnard Tavern.

The registration fee is $65.00 per person which includes museum and
lecture admission, coffee, lunch, and tea.
