Entry Level Exhibition Designer (full-time)

The Newark Museum, founded in 1909 by John Cotton Dana, is an art and
science museum with a historic commitment to education and public service.
Eighty galleries house art and science collections, including eighteenth-
to twentieth- century American Painting and Sculptures; Decorative Arts;
Native American, African, Pacific, Tibetan, and Asian Art; Classical
Antiquities; and Numismatics.  Part of the Museum complex is the 1885
Ballantine House, a newly restored National Historic Landmark with two
floors of period rooms and decorative arts galleries.  The Museum is also
home of the Mini Zoo and Dreyfuss Planetarium.

Position Purpose:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Exhibitions, the exhibition
designer will plan and direct the fabrication, installation and disassembly
of both temporary and permanent museum exhibits; supervise the production
of exhibits and have administrative responsibilities.  This position will
help develop and design interpretive exhibitions, directed toward young
people and adults, utilizing diverse materials.

Essential Responsibilities:
 - Design and draft plans for exhibitions and related furniture
 - Graphic design of labels, text panels and Museum signage
 - Craft mounts for objects out of a variety of materials
 - Install all works of art
 - Design and install lighting plan
 - Share responsibility for maintaining galleries on a daily basis
 - Manage inventory of departmental supplies

Qualifications:
Degree or certificate in industrial or environmental design, commercial art,
communications art or in architecture.  Experience in exhibit design and
production, related construction work and project management desirable.
Must have the ability to work effectively with others as well as in a
team environment.  Proficiency with MAC or PC computer programs,
especially PageMaker, Photoshop, CorelDraw and MiniCAD essential.
