I'm also in the JHU Museum Studies program. I will be completing my degree in December 2011.

I think the contacts I made (fellow classmates, teachers and museum professionals) online and in-person (onsite seminar, meet-ups) helped me in the job hunt, but I also made sure to continue doing internships. I have worked full-time and completed two internships on the side while taking two classes each semester. It's a bit hard to juggle, but I'm sure it helped me land my dream job.

In regards to internships, even short-term internships, can provide experience and contacts. I would recommend applying to the Smithsonian NMNH Spring Break Alternative or Winter Break Alternative internship programs. Internships can be anywhere from one week to a few months. They are unpaid, but useful for some hand-on experience. I worked with the map collection twice last year.
