Low pay is exactly why I did not go on an earn my master's in Museum studies, it just didn't pay to do so.  In fact the museum I work at NO ONE has a master degree in museum studies.  I have a BA in art history and studio art, and received my museum education through internships, entry level work, and online professional development classes.  I direct my interns/volunteers who are interested in working in a museum to look at these sites.  

As far as the job description, perhaps the institution set the standards so high, b/c they wanted to avoid getting everyone who is looking for any kind of job from applying.  If I lived in the vicinity, and wanted to work in a museum, and either had a significant other/housemate/lived with my parents, I would apply for the job.  I have never let the fact I don't have a master's get in my way.  In all the interviews I have been in for museum jobs, it is my experience, my desire to continue to learn and keep up with museums standards that has won them over.

I am very frank and upfront with the interns/volunteers I have about how much they will earn.  With or without a masters.
