My grandmother grew up on the Mississippi and mentions it frequently in her history of the
family. She talks about her father's business:

"About this time [ca 1904] Papa took on the steamboats. The Silver Crescent ran from
Keokuk to Quincy each day at 7:00, and back about 8:00 at night. . . . Also he had charge of the
Diamond Jo [sp?] line from St. Paul to St. Louis once a week and we could ride free of charge. I
went with a couple of the Kuses for the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis when I was 11 years old
with a $10 bill sewn in my undershirt. I think this was the year the river was very high and we
saw many animals being rescued from the water. . . ."
