ARCHITECTURAL PAINT RESEARCH IN BUILDING CONSERVATION
Understanding decorative paint with a view to informed conservation

A conference will take place at the National Museum, Copenhagen, Denmark
8th –11th May 2005 at the invitation of the National Museum of Denmark in
collaboration with English Heritage, Netherlands Department for Conservation
and the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research.

The general themes of the conference are:
· The Definition of Architectural Paint Research as a distinct discipline.
· Why carry out architectural paint research?
· Training for architectural paint research
· Architectural Paint Research as a method of understanding, documenting and
recording the building – not just a mean of recreating historic decorative
schemes.
· Interpreting findings to the public.
· Identifying and preserving decorative finishes.
· Historic paint as archaeological reference
· Alternatives to repainting a decorative scheme
· Possible creation of a proposal for European Standard defining standards
for Architectural Paint Research ?

The aim of the conference is :
· To create a common understanding of the profession among those involved in
the practical work of paint investigation.
· To create a dialogue with other building conservation professionals, such
as conservation architects, building contractors, conservation legislators,
curators, fine art conservators and building- archaeologists.
· To agree proposals for a European Standard defining standards for
Architectural Paint Research.

To a great extent, the scope of the conference will be determined by the
proposals received in response to the call for papers. We are confident that
the programme will reflect current interests and concerns. We are especially
interested in those proposals that discuss the problems and considerations
more than the decisions and solutions.

The language of the conference will be English.
