Hello all,

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the
McKinley National Memorial (burial site in Canton, OH
of President William McKinley), we are launching a
penny campaign as a fundraiser.

We know that school children and other communities
from across the country contributed to the fund, and
it was literally "the pennies of school children" that
made a significant contribution to the fund.

I know it might be a long shot, but we are hoping
maybe some of you might have clippings about the fund
drive in your local communities. Each state had a
quota to meet, based on their population. Money came
from across the country and around the world.

We have lots of news clippings, but they are all from
Ohio papers. We would like to find copies of other
news accounts from other states.

We have seen a poster for a fundraiser in FRANCE
raising money for the Memorial, so we know there are
great resources out there.

I know we have more of a vested interest in keeping
records pertaining to our own site, but because it was
a US president who was tragically assassinated, we
thought perhaps other communities might have saved
news clippings.

The dates would be primarily between September 1901
and 1903, although there could have been fundraising
up through the beginning of construction in 1905.

Thank you!

Kim Kenney
