Director
State Historical Museum
Madison, Wisconsin
Hiring Range: $73,000 -- $83,000

The director administers all museum programs (collections, stewardship,
research, interpretation, exhibition, education, and planning) as well as
the museum facility on the Capitol Square and an extensive contract
archaeology program, primarily for the Wisconsin Department of
Transportation. The museum director reports to the Society’s Associate
Director, serves as a member of the Society’s management and strategic
planning teams, and assists development staff in fund raising and special
programming. The museum operates with 27 permanent employees, 10-30
part-time employees, 61 volunteers, and an annual budget of approximately
$3 million.

The Museum houses 100,000 historical objects and over 100,000
archaeological artifacts. These items together represent the largest single
repository of material culture relating to Wisconsin history from
prehistoric times to the present. Highlights include Native American
ethnographic material, folk art, clothing, political ephemera, paintings,
and everyday utilitarian objects documenting work and home life. The
Society is undertaking a major project to place collections data in
computerized format to facilitate research and exhibit use.

The Society is considering a major construction project to triple the size
of the existing museum building, redesign exhibits, and establish
cooperative working relationships with sister institutions and the
soon-to-be-built, adjacent, $100 million Madison Cultural Center.

The Society seeks candidates with strong leadership, team building, and
communication skills; an audience orientation; and a demonstrated ability
to develop partnering relationships with others, such as Native Americans
and ethnic communities. Highly desirable is experience in the following
areas: capital construction projects, design and installation of new
exhibits, fund raising, and strategic planning.

To apply, send a letter of application and professional resume to
Director’s Office, State Historical Society of Wisconsin, 816 State Street,
Madison, WI 53706 by January 15, 2000.
