Standards in Action Workshop
1 - 3 October 1997
Churchill College, Cambridge, UK

The 1997 workshop is being held in the modern setting of Churchill
College, Cambridge. Your delegate fee includes accommodation and all
meals during the workshop as well as the reception at Kettle s Yard
Gallery, a tour of the Churchill Archives and a punt tour of Cambridge.
It also includes the Exhibition which will give you a chance to speak
with such companies as Adlib Information Systems, Bureau IMC of the
Netherlands, MODES, Oxford Mathematical and Computing Research Group and
LUSIS. A limited number of FREE sponsored places are available (see the
below for details).

We are also very pleased that Professor Roger Needham, Pro-Vice
Chancellor of Cambridge University and Managing Director of Microsoft
Research UK Ltd will be giving the Keynote Speech on the opening day of
the workshop. Places are still available so be sure to make the most of
this important opportunity.

Wednesday 1 October Introduction
Highlighting what is new in the Second Edition of SPECTRUM, and
introducing some of the issues that will be addressed during the
Workshop.

Thursday and Friday 2-3 October
There will be two concurrent strands to the Workshops:-
Session A1
A series of practical exercises using SPECTRUM will enable you to define
the needs of your museum, define best practice and adopt minimum
standards.
Session A2 - Drawing from Case Studies
Actively use SPECTRUM to help develop procedures for your museum and to
look at the implications. Identify and assess the training and
management implications of implementing new procedures.
Session A3 - Spreading the Word
Looking at how the museum profession can help museums implement SPECTRUM
effectively. This session will discuss the development of a network of
SPECTRUM advisors and be an opportunity to comment on a draft MDA
publication aimed to help users of SPECTRUM.
Session A4 - Making the Connection
Linking the procedures and the Units of Information - this session will
look at how the Units of Information support the procedures by defining
what and how to record information. Using practical exercises and case
studies the session will look at how the Units of Information allow for
consistent recording, the effective use of information use and
ultimately information exchange.

Session B1 - A Role for SPECTRUM
Looking at how SPECTRUM is actively being used in the wider museum
community. Presentations will cover areas such as how SPECTRUM supports
the work of the MGC, AMCs and Specialist Groups.
Session B2 - Standards, SPECTRUM and Software
SPECTRUM has been a central reference point for both developers and
users of computerised collections management systems. Case studies
illustrate how SPECTRUM has been used, and how the development of
SPECTRUM Profiles will assist both museums and suppliers in defining
their requirements.
Session B3 - Using SPECTRUM: the Wider Dimension
This session reviews how SPECTRUM is being implemented in a range of
projects both in the UK and abroad. One example of those discussed will
be the Aquarelle project which offers integrated access to cultural
heritage information across Europe. The session will also look at how
SPECTRUM is being used to enable information exchange between diverse
systems.

Exhibition
There will be dedicated exhibition time on Thursday offering a chance to
speak with software suppliers who are using SPECTRUM standards in the
development of software for museums.

Concluding Session
Drawing together the themes of the Workshop, this session will help set
the agenda for taking SPECTRUM forward and promoting its continuing
success
