I used a similar technique to hang a shallow basket vertically on a wall
a year or so ago...

Ethafoam. I know it's expensive, but the 4-ince thick blocks of ethafoam
are a god-sent for projects such as this one. My approach would be to
create a sort of grid of the ethafoam blocks that are cut to the profile
of the canvas, maybe spaced 18-24" apart. This can be glued with hot
melt glue and if done well is surprisingly rigid and light weight. Fill
in the spaces in the grid with more ethafoam and then pad with fiberfill
and cover with muslin. A wooden or metal hanging system can be
incorporated as well. I probably didn't describe this very well, but in
my mind it works fantastically!

I agree, I would LOVE to have this as a project!

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Exhibit Fabrication Question

I am looking for ideas on how to mount for display a huge textile. The
item is a
painted canvas that was on the nose cone of a submarine that was
recently
christened. The item is at least eight feet wide. Think of a giant
convex
surface. We would like to duplicate the shape of the end of the
submarine,
round and somewhat pointed. Essentially we need a large bird cage
attached
to a wall. Suggestions on how to mount this thing? Fiberglas mold?
Styrofoam
sections? Massive amount of fiberfill? Of course any thing will be
covered with
muslin and/or cotton batting to protect the fabric. Ideas are welcome! I
can
send photos if anyone likes. Thanks in advance.
