SCHOLARLY SYMPOSIUM
"FOR WHICH IT STANDS: THE AMERICAN FLAG SINCE 1777"

The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House Association is holding a scholarly
symposium "For Which It Stands: The American Flag Since 1777." The 2002
Symposium will be held on March 30, 2002 from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the
Governor Calvert House Inn in historic Annapolis, Maryland.

The Symposium is free to the public, but advanced registration is required.
Lunch can be purchased with advanced registration. Registration materials,
directions, and hotel lists are available by calling the Flag House at
(410) 837-1793 or e-mailing Cindy Olsen at <[log in to unmask]>.

Seven speakers will give presentations on the origins and evolution of the
American flag in historical, naval, and military contexts. There will also
be a talk on the current conservation work on the Star-Spangled Banner flag
at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. The
day will conclude with a tour of the U.S. Naval Academy Museum’s historic
flag collection.

The speakers are:
JAMES CHEEVERS, Senior Curator at the U.S. Naval Academy Museum,
HAROLD LANGLEY, Curator Emeritus of Naval History at the National Museum of
American History,
HENRY MOELLER, Professor at Dowling College,
SCOTT SHEADS, Historian at Fort McHenry National Monument,
WHITNEY SMITH, Director of the Flag Research Center,
SUZANNE THOMASSEN-KRAUS, Project Manager for the Star-Spangled Banner
Conservation project, and
GLENN WILLIAMS, Historian with the American Battlefield Protection Program
at the National Park Service.

The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House was the home of Mary Pickersgill who
sewed the 30-foot by 42-foot Star-Spangled Banner flag that flew over Fort
McHenry during the War of 1812 and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the
poem that became our National Anthem.

This Symposium was made possible in part with funds from The Maryland
Humanities Council, through a grant from the National Endowment for the
Humanities, and funds from The Good Earth Tea Company.
