According to the 1998 Yearbook of Science Center Statistics, average revenue
sources for science centers break down as follows:

Admission Tickets - 24%
Programs/Classes - 10%
Memberships - 7%
Gift Shop - 8%
Parking - 3%
Restaurant - 5%
Other Earned Income - 11%

Total Earned Income - 52%
Private Funds - 24%
Public Funds - 30%

This information is based on responses from 192 science centers. The
publication also breaks this down by size of institution. It might also be
useful for you to know that the average cost of service in this study was
$15.82 (n=255).

Even if you are from some other type of museum, this publication can be a
useful resource. It is available from the Association of Science-Technology
Centers http://www.astc.org/.
