A posting on H-Scholar (listserve for/on independent scholars) 
reminded me of the resources at Center for History and New Media at 
George Mason University (http://chnm.gmu.edu/). Here is the blurb
from the home page of their website:

"Since 1994, the Center for History and New Media has used digital media and
computer technology to democratize history-to incorporate multiple voices,
reach diverse audiences, and encourage popular participation in presenting
and preserving the past. We sponsor more than a dozen digital history
projects and offer free tools and resources for historians."

Among the tools, a way to send out surveys, useful for front-end 
evaluations, and an online method of eliciting "oral" histories--with 
some very interesting examples.
