The following announcement of ICOM's new discussion list, ICOM-L,
may be of interest to the members of MUSEUM-L. Apologies are made
to those of you who may already have seen this notice elsewhere.

The International Council of Museums Discussion List, ICOM-L,
is intended to provide an open forum for the discussion of
ICOM's activities.

ICOM is devoted to the promotion and development of museums
and the museum profession at an international level. It is a
nonprofit organization, associated with UNESCO, and has 12,000
members in 134 countries. ICOM has 102 National Committees and
25 International Committees which allow museum professionals
to work together in the development of special interests.

ICOM maintains two e-mail distribution lists to facilitate
communication both among the organization's component bodies,
and between them and the communities which they serve.

ICOM-Announce, which has been in operation for almost a year,
is intended to provide an official source of information about
the organization's activities. List members receive
announcements about the availability of ICOM documents on
archive sites on the Internet, as well as general news and
information about ICOM's scheduled events. ICOM-Announce is a
one-way list, only.

ICOM-L, which has just been established, provides a
corresponding public platform for the discussion of ICOM's
activities. It is the primary feedback channel for commentary
about material posted on ICOM-Announce. The contribution of
other material relevant to ICOM and its activities is also
encouraged.

Please note, that ICOM-L is intended specifically for the
discussion of issues relating to that organization. There are
other distribution lists (most noteably MUSEUM-L) which are
more suitable for general museum matters and ICOM-L should not
be seen as simply one more list to which material must be
posted if the contributor wishes to address the entire museum
community.

Both ICOM-L and ICOM-Announce are open for public subscription.
If you wish to join either of them please send a message to:

Detailed information about ICOM, including access to its
document repositories and the distribution lists operated
by its national and international committees, is found on
the ICOM site on the World Wide Web:
