Ditto to all responses. A short term solution might be to put a section of citrus rind in a cup of water and boil it in the microwave for a couple of minutes, dilute vinegar solution will also kill many odors and the 'smell' dissipates quickly.

Caroline makes an excellent point. There are many individuals with allergies to scents and fragrances found in air fresheners and other products. If anything, you should explain to your staff that you are not only concerned for the safety of the collection but also the safety of your visitors.
