I had a similar experience. I'm doing some volunteer work down at the local historical society, and one of my many duties is helping to recatalog the collection. Unfortunatly, the old system they numbered with involved cataloging where in the museum the object was, such as "East Wall" or "Case #5" (there being several cases with the number 5 marked on them), not realising that things get moved/misplaced/etc. One object I was asked to find was EW327 "Round interesting rock". Going to the shelves on the east wall, I found a round rock that some might find interesting. After a little more looking I found that the rock was in fact EW576 "Possible spear point". Still no sign of EW327.

Oh my if we do that, I am afraid the list will be overwhelming...that said, my favourite catalog discovery was simply "Large, roughly square, chunk of dirt" in the description. I thought 'nah, couldn't be' but my curiousity made me go look it up. Nested in a plactic bag, carefully wrapped in polyester batting, was said clump of dirt, with a note stating labeling was found to be impossible.
