The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in San Francisco
has a good fashion and art library which includes actual clothing and
costumes. Though not a museum per se, they do value & use their collection
quite a lot, and have rec'd some important wardrobe collections as bequests
over the years. Sorry, I don't have contact number, but SF phonebook
information can help easily. FIDM's Los Angeles campus may also have a
comparable resource.
