THINKING EVALUATIVELY: UNDERSTANDING YOUR VISITORS
February 25 & 26, 1999
National Museum of African Art
Faculty: John Falk, Marianna Adams, Jessica Luke

Are you among the many museum professionals who want to better
understand your visitors' experiences?  This two-day interactive
workshop will focus on how to integrate evaluative frameworks into
program/exhibit design and implementation to create better programs and
exhibits.  Discuss learning theory and recent research about museum
visitors with John Falk.   Work with professional evaluators to learn
how to frame meaningful and realistic questions.  Gain practical
experience with a variety of evaluation methods and techniques.

TEACHING WITH OBJECTS
March 12, 1999

Museums and objects are inseparable, and museum professionals are
continually looking for the most effective ways to use objects in
teaching school groups and interpreting for the general public.
Participants in this one-day interactive workshop will explore a variety
of ways to look at and interpret objects.  Learn how to use objects in
tours and oral presentations.   Write age-appropriate labels that match
current educational constructs.   Discover new ways of incorporating
objects into your programs.

APPLYING EDUCATIONAL THEORY & TECHNIQUES
March 5 & 6, 1999
Baltimore Museum of Art
Faculty:  Lynn Dierking, Andrea Lewis, Dale Jones

Participants in this two-day interactive workshop will explore
contemporary learning theories and concepts and then create activities
based on several models, including Howard Gardner=s and Bernice
McCarthy=s. Discuss educational theory and application with Lynn
Dierking. Learn to use critical thinking and active learning in your
programs.  Examine questioning strategies, object-based learning trunks,
and hands-on models.  Discover how to tap into resources all around to
get new ideas for old programs and exhibits.

MAKING IT COME ALIVE: MUSEUM THEATRE & COSTUMED CHARACTERS

There is no better way to add excitement to a program or to interpret
difficult topics than by adding museum theatre and costumed characters.
Museum theatre performances and dyanmic living history characters can
add new dimensions to your programs.  In this interactive workshop,
participants will learn how to develop high-quality museum theatre
programs, create effective costumed characters and enhance existing
programs.

John H. Falk, Director and founder of the Institute for Learning
Innovation, does research and consulting in free-choice learning
settings, including museums, and in the long-term impact of informal
educational institutions.  He is author of over sixty scholarly articles
in biology, psychology and education, and co-author with Lynn Dierking
of The Museum Experience.

Lynn D. Dierking, Associate Director of the Institute, is
internationally
recognized for her research on the behavior and learning of children,
families and adults in out-of-school settings and has published
extensively in these areas.  She has consulted with a wide variety of
museums on evaluation and on the application of learning theory to
practice.

Marianna Adams, Senior Associate at the Institute, has headed education
departments at the Ringling Museum and at the Museum of Art, in Ft.
Lauderdale.  She has conducted a wide variety of evaluation studies and
specializes in participatory evaluation and professional development.

Dale Jones, Senior Associate at the Institute, designs museum theatre,
living history, hands-on, and interpretive experiences for a variety of
museums and organizations.  He was Director of Interpretation at the
Baltimore City Life Museums and has a background in folk studies, living
history, and theatre.

Jessica Luke, Senior Associate at the Institute, was an art educator at
Agnes Etherington Art Center and the Art Gallery of Ontario where she
developed programs for both families and children.  She has conducted
evaluation studies in a wide variety of institutions including art
museums, history museums, science centers and botanical gardens.

Margaret Piatt, a consultant with the Institute, works in museum
education and interpretation, living history and museum theatre.  She is
Executive Director of Piatt Castles, a family history museum, and
Adjunct Professor in Museum Studies at Tufts University.   She was
formerly Associate Director of Education at Old Sturbridge Village.

Andrea Lewis, a consultant with the Institute, has worked in education
and programs at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Baltimore City Life
Museums, and Canterbury Shaker Village, where she is now Director of
Education.  Ms.Lewis has a background in dance, art and costume design.
