When I was a kid we lived in St. Louis for three years. For the 4th of July
one year the family went down to the river to watch the fireworks. It was a
warm and breezy, starry night and I don't remember the fireworks. What I do
remember is the music. Barges came down the river carrying folksingers --
Peter, Paul & Mary singing "If I had a hammer" is what I remember. The music
would come down river, around the bend, before the barge came into view, then
it would slowly float by -- maybe stop for a while, I don't remember -- and
then move on out of sight, with the music wafting behind them. One of those
golden memories and, you know, I just don't think there is another river like
it in the world.
