The United States National Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC also has a boxcar on display. They get very heavy visitorship so you might check with them on how they do it.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Recommendations for exhibiting an boxcar

Our museum is designing an exhibit centered around the Georgia 40/8 "Merci" boxcar. It is a ca. 1880 wooden French boxcar with large cast iron couplings on each side. The paint is from a restoration done in 1996. It is in good condition and the exterior and interior appear to be stable.

Our exhibit designer wants visitors to have access to the inside of the car. Here are the concerns I have: first, how will the car be protected? Is there a safe way to protect the floor? In my opinion the interior of the car should be protected with plexi-glass or some sort of barrier.
