Susan,
I agree with Cait that you can build the need for an intern into a grant
proposal. At the Baseball Hall of Fame I head up an internship program
that is endowed by one of our long-time donors. I've seen examples at
other museums where donors often fund interns in memory of a loved one
or for a specific project that the donor has an interest in. It
accomplishes two things that the donor can tout- helping the museum and
also enchancing students' education.

Susan,
Ten Chimneys incorporates planned money for internships as an annual
budget line item under Preservation. In my last job, I was able to fund
a paid graduate student internship under a grant for a specific exhibit
project. As an undergrad, one of my paid internships was funded as part
of a grant for a collections preservation project. You may also look to
community businesses or groups that might be interested in sponsoring a
student worker. - Cait

For those of you who offer paid internships, how do you fund these
positions?
