Tufani,

This is the sort of query that we are happy to answer as it does have
a bearing on the main purpose of this list.

The longevity of the media that comprises art and historic works
certainly much depends on the material, how it was manufactured,
stored, exhibited, and handled. Certainly some artists produce works
with the intent of their alteration and deterioration through exposure
and time. There is a long tradition in outdoor sculptures, for
example, for natural exposure to form patterned patination and
corrosion that is as much as an intent of the piece as the form is.
Many artists choose materials without much consciousness of longevity
but for their working properties, textures, colors, etc.

Many of modern art works that incorporate plastics, for example, are
now showing some of the severe condition problems that are inherent to
those materials.

It would be easier to give you a more specific answer if you could
name a media, or a few, and those of us on this list could probably
respond with very specific answers, suppliers, etc.

An excellent web site to find art and conservation materials
information is the Conservation and Artists Materials Encyclopedia
Online (CAMEO) that is sponsored by the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
