The Tech Museum of Innovation
Science Teacher Fellow
Temporary, Full Time Position for the 1999-2000 School Year

BACKGROUND

The mission of The Tech Museum of Innovation is to serve as an educational
resource that engages people of all ages and backgrounds in exploring and
experiencing technologies affecting their lives, and to inspire young
people to become innovators in developing technologies of the future. Join
a dynamic, creative team operating one of America’s premiere science and
technology museums.

The Tech Museum of Innovation announces a new Science Teacher Fellowship
for the Robert N. Noyce Center for Learning. Each year, an exemplary
science teacher will be selected to serve as the Science Teacher Fellow at
the museum. The Fellow’s primary responsibility will be to lead science
education programs for educators. Working as part of the Center for
Learning team, the Fellow will draw upon The Tech’s exhibits, programs, and
extensive resources with local industry to improve the teaching and
learning of science in regional schools.

Fellowship Design
In creating this new Fellowship position, The Tech will attract a talented
science teacher to contribute to the work of the Center for Learning. At
the same time, the Fellowship will provide a year of professional
development to enable the teacher to advance their knowledge and craft as a
science teacher. Since the Fellowship will only last for one year, The
Tech will not be permanently draining science teaching talent from schools.
Rather the Fellowship will contribute to the practice of science teaching
and reward and recognize outstanding educators.

Additionally, the Science Teacher Fellows will bring different disciplines
of science knowledge and expertise to The Tech. The Center for Learning
will capitalize on the science discipline of the Fellow, offering life,
earth, or physical science education depending on the Fellow’s training and
experience.

Recruitment Process
In the spring, The Tech will advertise the Fellowship and recruit a teacher
for the coming school year. The goal will be to complete the process in
time to allow the Fellow candidate to negotiate a leave of absence and
provide ample time for their school or district to find a temporary
replacement.

The Fellowship will be open to practicing teachers in the Silicon Valley
area who hold a position teaching science at the upper elementary, middle,
or high school level. Applicants must be recommended by their school or
district, with the understanding that if selected, a leave of absence can
be arranged.

Fellowship Responsibilities
The Fellow will work with the Center for Learning team to design and
deliver professional development opportunities for pre-service and
practicing teachers in the area of science education.

Each Fellow will also design a project to completed during the year. The
project will serve both the needs of the Center for Learning and the
Fellow’s teaching context. The nature and design of the project will be
determined jointly by the Fellow and the Executive Director.

Compensation
The Fellow will continue to be an employee of their school or district on
special assignment to The Tech. In addition the Fellow will receive an
honorarium of 10% of their salary.

Continuing Relationship
A goal of the Fellowship program will be to build a cadre of local teachers
who will serve as resources for future Center for Learning programs as well
as their schools and districts. In addition, The Tech will look to Fellows
to help identify future fellowship candidates. The intention is to
establish a group of outstanding science teachers who will have an ongoing
relationship with The Tech and be accorded special status for events and
activities in the years to come.
