The 'Cerberus' is slowly sinking into Port Phillip Bay.

Laid down in 1867 and launched in September 1870, Cerberus was the first
RN ship built with an iron hull and four 10-inch Armstrong Muzzle Loading guns
in two of Cowper Coles turrets mounted on the center-line - a forerunner of
the modern battleship. The guns and turrets are still in place.

During a violent storm in December 1994 its bulwarks started to collapse
lowering the foredeck to below the waterline. The teak deck will soon be
damaged beyond repair unless the hull is raised to its original position
above water as the first stage in its restoration.

Commendably, the owners, Bayside City Council, PO Box 27, Sandringham,
Victoria 3191, Australia, are trying to raise funds to salvage this historic
vessel of international significance. They need out help.

If you want to play an important part in the preservation of Cerberus you
could write or fax (03-9598 4474)the Chief Commissioner of Bayside City Council
to reinforce the significance of Cerberus to our international maritime heritage
.
