Beginning in 1954, staff members from Pittsburgh's
original Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular
Science produced many miniatures [including thousands
of miniature trees from yarrow plants] and animations
(some of these historically accurate) for Buhl's
extremely popular seasonal exhibit, the Great
Miniature Railroad and Village. You can read about the

However, in the majority of cases, producing
miniatures was only a part of their job; most were
also planetarium technicians. Also, miniature
hobbyists were hired part-time, or volunteered, to
make some of the miniatures
Today, The Carnegie Science Center, which now operates
the exhibit, has a very small staff producing such
miniatures. There are jobs in this field, but the
opportunities are few and far-between.
